Don’t Get Scissor Happy. Get Scissor Smart!

Common Issue: Spilt ends. Hate them! Now, let’s be clear, you SHOULD aim at getting your ends clipped every 6-8 weeks. Whatever your hair type or condition (natural, curly, straight, blonde, or blue), trimming at least a half-inch routinely is really one of the key components to achieving healthy hair. Aside from getting rid of split ends, a quick clean up can reduce breakage, keep your hair even, promote growth, and prevent split ends from coming back. I wouldn’t recommend clipping your own hair, but it is best to go to a professional. Depending on the condition of your hair, there should never really be a time when you need to get more than 2 inches(at the most) cut off. Some stylists can be a little “scissor happy,” and will trim more off than needed.
It’s highly recommended that you clip your ends, and I’m sure, most of you have heard this a thousand times. It’s best if you stick to routinely clipping your ends, buttttt apparently, this suggestion is not always attainable. You may not have the funds, time, or the patience to see a professional. If this is the case, and you really need a quick fix in the meantime, give Pantene’s Split End Repair Keratin Protection Creme {$7, drugstores} a try. It can be used on wet or dry hair, binds existing split ends, and helps to prevent any further breakage. The keratin formula also protects your strands from heat damage. My ends were looking a little on the limp side. I used 1 pump on my ends, rubbed it in, and sealed in the product by going over my ends with a flat-iron once. I was very satisfied with the ending result. I wouldn’t say it should be a permanent fix for your split end drama, but it is an amazing temporary fix. If you’re short on time, I’d say give it a try!
L!fe Happens with Tarte Cosmetics!
This week Tarte Cosmetics teamed up with the upcoming film, L!fe Happens, for a private advanced screening. It’s a very cute comedy that you and your girlfriends should definitely go see. Without spoiling it, I will say that overall the movie seemed to have an underlying theme reminding us that we sometimes need to only worry about the things that matter most to us. Being who you are is truly the best person you can be!
Prior to viewing the movie, there was a brief beauty chit chat with Celebrity Makeup Artist, Amy Nadine and Actress, Krysten Ritter. Some of the makeup used throughout the film happened to be from Tarte. One of the star products included in the film is the LipSurgence Lip Tint (a personal fave!). It’s hard enough finding an all natural lip tint with a big color payoff. Tarte’s LipSurgence Lip Tints give your lips a powerfully pigmented flush that lasts for hours. The tints also nourish your lips with a moisturizing mix of vitamins C & E, peppermint, and jojoba oils. AHHH-MAZZEE-INGGG!

Get it Right, Get it Tight: A few Gym Bag Essentials
Summer will be here before you know it, and the gyms have been flooding with everyone working toward that perfect beach bod. While sweating and slaving away on the treadmill this evening, I thought about the top 3 items we all need to have in our gym bags this season.
Dove go fresh Rebalance Deodorant {$5, Drugstores} deodorant is usually a staple product in most of our bags anyway. What I love about the rebalancing deodorant is that it continually hydrates your skin. This is beneficial because while you work out and sweat, your skin isn’t loosing as much balance as it would with other deodorants that don’t necessarily have any rebalancing agents. Also, the fresh hints of plum and sakura blossom bloom enough so that you don’t feel bad about skipping your daily spritz of perfume.
Yes to Cucumbers On-The-Go Facial Towelettes {$3, yestocarrots.com} Awarded an official stamp from the Beauty Bible, Allure, these wipes are the perfect recipe for all those sticky, wet, sometimes unsanitary moments we have in the gym. It’s an instant refresher to cool you down a bit, and keep your pores free of dirt. Most times, your skin becomes a little tense and sensitive while working out because your pores are opening up. These towelettes will help to soothe any aggravation with key ingredients like cucumbers, green tea, and aloe. You can also use the towelettes to wipe down any equipment that somebody left their funk on…I’m just saying.

Save Your Do GymWrap {25, saveyourdo.com} A few weeks ago, I found out about Nicole Ari Parker’s new gym wraps on essence.com. The sole purpose of the wraps are to help maintain your hair do while working out. With patent pending edge control technology, it wicks away moisture, keeps your hair in place, and allows heat to escape. Parker’s inspiration derived from the common excuse women use about not working out because of their hair. Sounds silly, but this is the ugly truth. 2 snaps and a Zumba Twist for Nicole Ari Parker, and her genius idea to give women another reason to work out and stay healthy.

Wella Professionals at Paris Fashion Week: Issey Miyake A/W’12
With a minilamist approach, the hair look at Issey Miyake’s A/W’ 12 show was sleek and sexy. Low pony’s seem to be trending this “fashion season,” and I’m loving it! It’s chic yet demanding, and allows plenty of room for you to really play up your makeup.
Check out how Wella Professionals Global Creative Director, Eugene Soulieman, was inspired and his easy at-home steps for creating this look.
The Look: Mineral Minimal
“I wanted to create a graphic, slick, minimal hair style that provided multiple focal points” said Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Care & Styling, Wella Professionals. “The hair needed to be light, fresh and straight at the back, with a more masculine feel at the front of the head. There is also a tension in the hair look that makes it feel sculpted in a clean, controlled way. The application of a ‘stripe’ of gel through the hair creates an extra detail which adds to the overall minimal effect and plays on the concepts of texture and shine” added Eugene.
Get the Look:
1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner.
2. Apply Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to damp hair and blow dry straight using a round brush to flatten the cuticle and continue to blow-dry with a round brush.
3. When hair is dry, create a diagonal parting across the head.
4. Next, section off the hair from behind the ears and across the top of the head and pull back in to a tight, low pony tail. Spray Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray on to a soft bristle brush and brush this through the hair to create a clean, shiny surface area (spraying the hair spray on to the brush rather than directly on to the hair helps to finely distribute the product).
5. Tie the pony tail with elastic.
6. Take the hair from the sides of the head, one side at a time and tie in to the ponytail with elastic, ensuring that you continue to spray the brush with hair spray and smooth the hair as you go.
7. Using Wella Professionals Shape Shift Molding Gum, apply to a strip of hair on one side of the parting using a tint brush and painting on to the surface of the hair.

NYFW FALL 2012: Backstage Beauty with Timo Weiland
This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of exploring the majic that happened behind the Timo Weiland Men’s and Women’s Fall 2012 Show. Launching only a few short years ago including a collection of iconic neckwear, the brand has grown to also include signature clothing, knitwear, and accessories. The designs showcased in the Fall 2012 show were inspired by the classic flavor of St. Marks Place in New York City’s East Village. This was a time when the downtown area was truly “the spot” for up and coming artists, rock and hip hop musicians. Designers, Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein, aimed at mimicking this interesting decade of style and revolutionizing it into wearable modern-day design.
Complimenting the ambiance of the show, L’Oreal Professionnel Master Session Artist, Joseph DiMaggio, led a team of stylist to create hair that was “expertly textured and effortlessly lived-in.” Each model sported a care-free low pony secured by a thin black cord. One of the STAR new products, L’Oreal Professionnel Fresh Dust ($19, 3.4 oz-out this coming April!) was sprayed all over and under to create volume and a controlled messy texture. Overall, the hair for the show definitely gave off a downtown eclectic vibe.
Led by Celebrity Manicurist, Gina Edwards, the nail looks were created using Impress Press-On Manicure by Broadway Nails ($6-$8, CVS).
These nails are pretty ideal considering everything needs to be done fast back stage. The line of nails includes 18 cool colors and patterns. There’s no messy glue to worry about, and you are done applying in the blink of an eye. Most of the colors used during the show were darker plums and purples which you can’t go wrong with for fall.
Last but certainly not least, I had a chance to chat briefly with Sephora’s Lead Makeup Artist, Jose Rivera, about the makeup looks created for the Timo Weiland show. Here’s what he had to say….
